“Perhaps too much of everything is as bad as too little”. – Edna Ferber
Do you agree with this statement on excess?
First of all, with all due respect to Edna Ferber, who was an American novelist, short story writer and playwright, I believe that the quote above is very bad from many points of view.
Words “too much” and “too little” are not applicable to many things. For example, it can’t be too little ocean, too much beauty or too little children.
It also can’t be too little criminals or too many competent people in the government.
In general, “too little” and “too much” are subjective terms. In my country many people believe that $10 per hour for their work is too little. In some countries it is “too much”.
Too little of pain is better than too much pain.
If too little people can hack in your bank account it is also very good.
It can’t be too much resources:: pure drinking water, oil, woods, highly qualified people. The more resources country has the better.
Even if we apply Edna Ferber’s quote only to wealth, I can’t agree with her!
People can have too little of everything and be very happy if they are loved (see the photo below).
During the Great Patriotic War my mother and I lost everything (including relatives and friends), we starved but we were happy together.
Many great people initially had nothing but it motivated them to learn, to work hard, to meet their goals.
CELEBRITIES WHO STARTED WITH NOTHING
BILLIONAIRES WHO CAME FROM NOTHING
Is it bad that people who created new companies or new products, or many thousands of jobs or are wonderful entertainers became very rich??
I don’t think that it is bad or that they have too much.
I believe that we should pray that our country has many such people because without them all others would live much worse! The more rich people a country has the better!
Let’s all be rich! No limits!
Oh I volunteer for that! Yes I say everybody should be rich!
But not by robbing a bank. 😉
True, we have to stay out of the robbing business. Bad for the Soul.
😉
I pray everybody should have enough to live, if become rich, then less time to remember the God. When we have problems, we surely remember and pray to God.
Rich people have many problems too. Bad health or children with bad health, some live
where wars are raging. Problems of managing companies, of personal relations, etc.
Yes. So better to pray to give only enough to live. ” Give us this day our daily bread”(Matthew 6:11). Everyone should have enough to live, rich should give a part to the poor.
Do you know any rich who does not give to poor? In my country rich people (1%) pay
more than 40% taxes and give billions in charities (Gates foundation and many others).
sorry sir. Tax goes to govt. charity to foundations is ok, but sometimes that may be for tax exemption. without foundation rich can help poor directly by helping for medical treatment, build home for homeless, educate poor child etc. Many rich are helping poor, but not all, if all help then no poverty will be in the world. “23 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly I tell you, it is hard for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven. “Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.” (Matthew 19:23-24)
Your quotes apply to times when there was no social security systems.
Largest portion of taxes in America used by government to help poor
(Medicaid, free home assistance, homes for homeless, education for poor kids).
So today every rich person in America helps poor.
May God bless them.
Just for you: our income is below poverty level of our country but I know that our rich keep the country afloat.
Thats great. There are many rich who help the poor.
In the post I gave links to two articles about people who were very
poor and became very rich. I believe that they were blessed and deserve
praise for what they did and doing.
I think you are right, everything is relative… Since wastage & consumerism is such an issue these days in the developed world (over consumption) the quote falls flat with me.
Glad that you agree with me. I also hate pretentious (not precise) sentences.
I agree so long as the rich use the wealth they can never use to invest in a cause that will benefit those in real need. Too many of the super rich hoard their wealth in a miserly manner.

“Too many”? How do you know and what is too many? Is it majority? Do they hoard their wealth or use it
for trusts for members of the family? If rich pay taxes and create hundreds of thousands of jobs why
should anyone say: “It’s not enough? Let’s raise your taxes”.
I believe that people on welfare should not be allowed to vote.

You are right about the use of the words too much and too little.
However, there is also a difference in too little having too much versus having too little.

I value your opinion. Wise investments can also be used if the Corporations products further a worthy cause too if the profits are used wisely to expand jobs and opportunity.

I am convinced that our opinions have a lot in common. However, I want to stress
that many problems today caused by attempts to use a hybrid economic structure:
a mixture of capitalism with socialism. When government possesses high percentage
of the country’s resources and dictates what private sector must do it is already
not a capitalism. It is a very dangerous step to dictatorship.

Keep in perspective that the words democracy and capitalism are recent words in history that have come about only in the past four hundred years.
That is a short time in history and many past civilizations have failed as a result of wealth disparities.
All these descriptions are meaningless words to a hungry man watching his family starve. There have also been in history good and bad dictators.
Moderation and wisdom is sourly needed today along with a great leader in my opinion.

.
How can you choose a good leader when voters are ignorant and brainwashed by media?
Even more important is the fact that foreign countries (often enemies) finance
presidential elections due to a new method of online fundraising (look at its screen).
Anyone can break election laws by giving millions in small increments ($200 or less)
using just one credit card and different names.
Wish I knew. This I do know. Change at the top and works down. If there is no light bulb on top of the light pole, there will not be any light at the bottom.

Agree 100%!
Reblogged this on PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS and commented:
What is excess? What is justice? Should we all try to succeed and to become rich or should we solve all problems only by increasing taxes? What is too much and too little? Please read my thoughts in the old post in the writing challenge and don’t miss facts about rich people in the post.
I see “communication problem”. It’s typical between men and women 😉 (Sorry. I can’t help it. Ha.) Helen
