Get a feeling of Sergei Yesenin’s poetry

Sergei Yesenin

Sergei Yesenin

I decided to write a short story about Sergei Yesenin, a great Russian poet. I love images and music of his poems from my childhood.

Once he met a girl. Her name was Isadora Duncan. Then his life drastically changed. I am going to write about it later.

In the meantime I want you to get a feeling of Sergei’s poetry

Below is one of his poem translated by Alec Vagapov.

Please let me know if you like it.

***************************************************************************************************

We’ll depart this world forever, surely,

To repose in peace and quite. Oh, my Lord!

Maybe, I shall also have to duly

Pack my things preparing for the road.

*

Oh, my birch-tree woods! Amazing pictures!

Oh, my dear land! My sandy plains!

In the face of crowds of mortal creatures

I’m unable to conceal my pains.

*

I’ve been filled with love and admiration

For the things embodying the soul.

Peace to aspens, lost in contemplation,

Spreading branches, staring at the shoal!

*

I have thought in silence days and hours,

I have written songs. And I don’t grieve.

I am happy in this gloomy world of ours

To have had a chance to breathe and live.

*

I am happy, I have kissed a woman,

I have slept in grass and flower-bed,

And I never, like a decent human,

Hit a dog or kitten in the head.

*

The unknown land! No blooming pictures!

No amazing fields of wheat, so fine!

Hence, before the crowds of mortal creatures

I have always shivers down the spine.

*

In that land, I know, there won’t be any

Fields of wheat that shine like gold at night

That’s the reason why I love those many

Living with me in this country-side.

We need more love today!

In a happy family love must flow in all directions. Communications are easy and honest between all generations as it is very important to understand needs of every member of the family.

In February 2013 I wrote in Russian a poem expressing feelings of my wife and myself. The poem written  for our children and grandchildren. Later some of our friends told us that it is applicable to all children and grandchildren.

Below is the poem in English and in Russian. I ask your forgiveness for the loose translation from Russian into English. I hope that you will understand the meaning of the poem.

********************  WE NEED MORE LOVE TODAY!  **************************

We were waiting for you when we were
Single. Then when we married.
We were waiting for you for years,
Then daily and every hour.
*
We loved you before you were born
And love you very much today
Thank you, Lord, for children and
Grandchildren, your gifts to us!
*
Our parents and older relatives passed
Away and their love is in our memories.
Some of our friends left this world too.
We miss their love very much!
*
You are our youth and light.
Our love to you grows every day.
Please love us more,
We need more love today!
*
Love us, show us your love!
There is no sense of hiding it.
Nobody knows how long we’ll
Be together. Hope many years!
*
*****************************  ЛЮБИТЕ НАС!  *********************
*

On a huge scale

PHOTO CHALLENGE: SCALE

I was not recently in space and did not make photos of planets to highlight differences in their sizes.

I decided to submit to this challenge a simple photo below taken near our apartment house in Queens.

Everyone can see a difference in size and age between a mother and a daughter on this picture.

However, no scale can measure size and depth of their love to each other.

They are in motion among billions of other human beings.

Everyone needs love! On a huge scale!

About wisdom

The saddest aspect of life right now is that science gathers knowledge faster than society gathers wisdom.

~Isaac Asimov

It is easier to find a score of men wise enough to discover the truth than to find one intrepid enough, in the face of opposition, to stand up for it.

~A.A. Hodge

Wisdom consists of the anticipation of consequences.

 ~Norman Cousins

Wisdom comes by disillusionment.

~George Santayana

Wisdom outweighs any wealth.

~Sophocles

For beautiful eyes, look for the good in others; for beautiful lips, speak only words of kindness; and for poise, walk with the knowledge that you are never alone.

Audrey Hepburn

He who lives in harmony with himself lives in harmony with the universe.

This post was initially inspired by Cee’s black and white challenge “Table, Chairs, Seating of Any Kind”.

Then I noticed that there is a photo challenge “Benches” and in February photos of benches also must be in B & W.

I already took part before in the challenges “Textures”, “Depth” and “Serenity” but this time I decided to combine everything together.

A huge cake on the table shows depth of a daughter’s love to her mother.

You see tables, chairs, sofas and swing. They are from wood, iron, plastic, leather.

IMG_0388 (2) (640x480)

There is a depth of space behind benches of the third photo.

I also find serenity in this photo. The park is empty and beautiful in the early morning.

The fouth photo shows my college friend Ruben on the iron swing in Pocono Manor.

We are friends for 63 years. I am sure there is depth in our friendship.

By the way, in my first and only play Ruben is one of major characters. To read the play click on its title “LOVE AND MOSCOW DERBY”.

I have no idea what Ruben was thinking about when I shot this photo.

It is possible that he was remembering with gratitude the day when he was politely asked to marry his wife. They are together for many years and have four great-grandchildren.

It’s possible that he was simply enjoying gorgeous summer day and serenity of the place.

I published many posts about our life in Pocono Manor. The picture below shot in the historic Pocono Manor Inn. Chairs there covered by fabrics.

Depth (quotes and photos)

DEPTH

The moment you have in your heart this extraordinary thing called love and feel the depth, the delight, the ecstasy of it, you will discover that for you the world is transformed.

Jiddu Krishnamurti

The mark of your ignorance is the depth of your belief in injustice and tragedy. What the caterpillar calls the end of the world, the Master calls the butterfly.

Richard Bach

It is not length of life, but depth of life.

Ralph Waldo Emerson

Depth of friendship does not depend on length of acquaintance.

Rabindranath Tagore

We have now sunk to a depth at which restatement of the obvious is the first duty of intelligent men.

George Orwell

Stars (quotes and my painting)

Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.

Harriet Tubman

Love knows not distance; it hath no continent; its eyes are for the stars.

Gilbert Parker

Be glad of life because it gives you the chance to love, to work, to play, and to look up at the stars.

Henry Van Dyke

For age is opportunity no less Than youth itself, though in another dress, And as the evening twilight fades away The sky is filled with stars, invisible by day.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Keep your eyes on the stars, and your feet on the ground.

Millie and “Pit of Vipers”

Below is Millie. Several moments of her life she was slightly busy (student, teacher, wife, mother of six kids, teacher again). If you want to know more just click HERE.

MILLIE THOM

MILLIE THOM

After retirement Millie started to write a trilogy of historical novels “Sons of Kings”.

Two books of the trilogy “Shadow of the Raven” and “Pit of Vipers” are already published.

In November of 2014 I read  “Shadow of the Raven” and wrote about the book HERE.

Two weeks ago I started to read  “Pit of Vipers”.

However, I had a feeling that I read a book with this title long time ago.

Then I remembered that during my early years in the USA I worked as an accountant for the publishing house Grosset and Dunlap. One of its very popular product lines was Nancy Drew Girl Detective Series. “Pit of Vipers” was #18 of Nancy Drew books. It was a case about stealing a snake at the River Heights Zoo.

cover“Pit of Vipers” by Millie Thom is for people of all ages. It is a historical novel about invasion Danes in England and wars between Danes and Anglo-Saxon kingdoms during life of the Wessex king Alfred.

After reading the first book of the trilogy I was ready for Danes’ raids and battles. I was looking forward for new adventures of Eadwulf, the son of king of Mercia.

Very often I am able to tell what will happen in the middle and the end of a book after I read only several pages of it.

However, in “Pit of Vipers” Millie surprised me many times. Yes, there are raids and battles, there are shields’ walls. However, there are also love and friendship, many unpredictable turns and twists. There are wonderful characters of women and men.

My hobby is learning history of civilizations. I found in the book new interesting information (Danes in the Middle Sea, sea battles with Moors).

The book written very well. It’s a pleasure to read it anywhere in any weather.

Don’t miss your chance!

Ask “Do I Want to Be Married?” Every. Single. Day.

Two weeks ago I read a post by Adriana Eissa: “Ask “Do I Want to Be Married?”. Every. Single. Day.”

I liked the post and suggested Adriana to enter it in my challenge “OUR WAYS“. She kindly did it.

Please read her post. In the nearest future I am going to ask you to vote on all entries in the challenge.

A Happy Heart and Soul

Sunset Girl. Photographer Unknown. Sunset Girl. Photographer Unknown.

Crazy talk, right? No. It’s actually sound advice.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m all about the life long commitment of a beautiful, healthy, transformative marriage but it’s never a death sentence, never was supposed to be an obligation you no longer enjoyed or questioned.

When you wake up in the morning ask yourself…

“Do I want to be married?”

“Do I want the job I have?”

“Do I like the life I live?”

“Do I want to be here, this stage of my life?”

ASK IMPORTANT QUESTIONS AND YOU’LL RECEIVE IMPORTANT ANSWERS.

If the answer is yes (and I hope it’s a yes) then you’ve recommitted yourself to something wonderful. Reinvest in that something wonderful with a fresh heart and open yourself to a new perspective.

You made the choice to continue, so do so with enthusiasm. Your resolve will be stronger for it. Appreciate that…

5 quotes about women

A woman is like a tea bag – you can’t tell how strong she is until you put her in hot water.

Eleanor Roosevelt

Women are made to be loved, not understood.

Oscar Wilde

Women, like men, should try to do the impossible. And when they fail, their failure should be a challenge to others.

Amelia Earhart

Man does not control his own fate. The women in his life do that for him.

Groucho Marx

The age of a woman doesn’t mean a thing. The best tunes are played on the oldest fiddles.

Ralph Waldo Emerson

MOMENT IN TIME

“Darling, we must go for a walk. Today is Monday and RESTLESS JO expecting our post*.

“Yes, my love. You know, THE WORLD IS A BOOK and we need to read at least one page daily. Than we might be invited to make an entry in the TRAVEL TALES OF LIFE.”

“My dear husband! Please let me check first! This old man from the “PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS” is very close. I don’t think that he is dangerous but people of his age are unpredictable.”

“How I love you, my dear wife! You always protect me and lead in the right direction. And your back and tail are so beautiful! I enjoy looking at them all time between meals!”

My friend Ramen

Life is full of surprises. Some of them are very, very pleasant, even delicious!

Ramen dry noodle soup was a pleasant surprising discovery of my life. Here is from Wikipedia: “Instant noodles are a precooked and usually dried noodle block, sold with flavoring powder and/or seasoning oil, usually in a separate packet…Dried noodle blocks are cooked or soaked in boiling water…”

Imagine! You come to a store, look for Ramen soups, pay $1 for 5 or 6 packages of different flavors and then you are a happy child, woman or man! Is not it wonderful?

MY FRIEND RAMEN

MY FRIEND RAMEN

Suppose you are with a small child in a place where children are running together as wild beasts. You can’t leave a child alone but from time to time you need to feed her or him. In such a case Ramen is your best friend! You need only a minute and a child is on her/his way to happiness.

When they were younger all of our grandchildren stayed with me for some time in Pocono Manor (a time-sharing place) and all of them loved Ramen soup. They called it “Grandpa’s soup”.

One of the reasons they loved it so much was that they could choose a flavor. Certainly, they chose different flavors almost daily.

One Sunday our friends with 6 years old granddaughter Ann visited us. They told us that they had only two hours as the girl had a bad appetite and was very choosy.

We knew that her Grandma was a good chemist and she was also extremely proud that she was an excellent cook.

It was a hot sunny day and everyone was at the pool. Then I said: “Ann, we have 5 grandchildren of different ages and all of them love my soup. You know, they especially love to choose a flavor for the soup. What do you love more: chicken, shrimp, beef or original flavor? Make a choice and I cook it for you very fast”.

Her Grandma said: “JF, she will not eat anything you give her!”

Ann told me: “I don’t know what is original but I want it!”

We went to our suit and in a minute she was eating my soup with a great gusto. After she finished it I gave her chicken with potatoes and she gave this dish full attention too.

When we returned to the pool Ann said: “Grandma, I’ve never had anything so delicious in my life!”

My friend Ramen was very proud!

Cappuccino or a day when we were very rich

First time I tried cappuccino in February of 1975. I was 40 years old. We lived in Lido di Ostia and waited for American visas.

Another immigrant who somehow had a lot of money and liked to play chess with me bought cappuccino for both of us.

I was afraid to try it as in the Soviet Union I had terrible allergy each time I drank a cup of coffee. However, my partner insisted that cappuccino is very good and I must try it.

What could I do? I raised a cup, opened my mouth, took a mouthful and …fell in love. Not only this. Somehow cappuccino became for me a symbol of freedom, a symbol of Italy, of this wonderful beautiful country with very warm people.

Years passed and we visited Italy again. We took a two weeks trip from the north to the south. Every day I drank a cup of cappuccino and enjoyed it very much. Some members of our tourist group told me that it did not make sense to pay two euros for a cup of cappuccino. With my very bad hearing it was very easy to ignore it.

One day our group went to Capri. You do know that the island is beautiful and you can have as many splendid views as you want. But usually tourists after taking in a good part of nature’s beauty go shopping.

I warned my wife that we should not do it. We did not need anything. Everything on Capri was very expensive. But this time something happened with her hearing. She took my hand and we found ourselves in the nearest boutique.

It was very nice in the air-conditioned store. Tourists recovered from the heat outside and were very busy leaving their money inside the store.

My wife looked around, then she came to me and said: “I found a wonderful tee-shirt for you! It’s unique and it costs only 35 euros!”

Only 35 euros! Tee-shirt! I could not hear it!

Still I went to see that unique tee-shirt. When love speaks wise man listens.

It really was beautiful. Only the fabric was rather sick and the tee-shirt had sleeves.

“Darling, when will I wear it? It’s not suitable for parties and it’s not good in summer”.

“Don’t worry, we’ll think about it later”.

We bought the tee-shirt and went out of the store.

There was another hour before departure from Capri.

It was impossible to stay in the sun.

At that moment I noticed a café around the corner. People were sitting in the shadow enjoying life.

“My love”, said I. “Would you like to have a cup of cappuccino?”

‘Oh, yes! Yes!”

1cappucc

A beautiful young smiling girl showed us the best table in the café and in two minutes we had colorful richly smelling cappuccino. We drank it very, very slowly and looked at unfortunate people from our group who was standing in the sun.

Life was wonderful, we were immensely rich!

Soon it was time to leave and I asked for a check. The beautiful young smiling girl gave it to my wife. My love looked at it, sighed and said: “Darling, please pay 19 euros. It was worth it! We are very rich today!”

New Year’s resolutions?

I have to confess that I have never made New Year’s resolutions.

For many years it was simply necessary to survive.

When problems or needs arose I tried to do my best to solve problems or satisfy needs. There was no time for procrastination, for doubting what was possible.

It’s impossible always to be a winner, but doing your best actually makes you a winner. And it is always possible to adjust needs and to see if your problems are real.

2015 is coming.

What am I going to do?

To enjoy life, love, friendship, creativity, beauty!

The Sun will be rising again tomorrow, the Earth will be beautiful, all oceans will be in their usual places.

We live in the wonderful world!
